On my course today I learned that when projects are at their midpoint, things tend to change. For example the relations between the team members or the way the project is executed. After this weekends’ hike I am coming close to the halfway point of my challenge and for me things are changing.
After I hiked probably 500km with what others would not consider good weather, I got strong enough to really take advantage of the current longer days. I remember one hike in which I did 26km just before dark and I was happy about it. Now, it gets dark much later and I finished my 44km hike almost at sunset. Yes, you read that right, I hiked 44km in one day! And, besides the blisters and screaming feet during the last 3km, and the headache next day due to a beer too many, I had no pain! As I said, things are changing.
When I started this challenge I thought the Pieterpad was ideal to make a lot of distance, and I could use the day hikes to walk around with a heavy pack. I did not really thought this true, apparently, because the Pieterpad it is ideal to bring a backpack for camping. And at day hikes, as they are only for one day, I can exhaust my body and have it recover the next day, ideal for some long distance hiking.
Now I am getting all excited an curious, what is the maximum I could walk? This whole challenge seem to break loose from dreaming of big trips to actual challenging myself every hike again. Off course, I am still dreaming about big trips, but I also see this hiking more of a sport. I can get better and look for the boundaries of what is possible. I got still a long and happy way to go!
Hike on!
Distance: 44/596/1500 (this hikes distance/total so far/goal to reach)
