I have been building up quite some kilometers, but as this challenge is about more than just making kilometers. Considering it also as training for thru-hiking, it would be good to hike more with a heavy pack. This has as advantage that my kilometers and time spend are less, but the work out may be equal or even better.
Last weekend I had little over twenty kilo on my back and went for a hike around my house. First my shoulders and legs were again a little bit awkward with the extra weight. I managed to hike quite comfortably after, most of the time, but many times my shoulders and legs were complaining. Though earlier I did a comfortable hike with 20 kilo’s this time I could not really make friends with my pack this time. It could have been the weather which has been warm causing my feet to swell up and my head just wanting to read a book.
Because I had a lot of time to cover the planned 20km, I took long breaks of first half an hour and my second was an hour long. I was just relaxing at a picnic table, eating some crackers and reading my book. Just enjoying the weather and resting my feet. It was a good day but I was glad to be finished with the hike, the twenty kilo’s remained literally a burden on my shoulders and I think I really should consider it as a maximum to carry and try as hard as possible to keep it lower than that.
Hike on!
