The worst for my challenged happened! I got injured and it may last for couple weeks before I can hike again. I had this complete irrational anger towards one of my feet for a day. Why are you doing this? I took so good care of you, I massaged you couple times a week, taped you on hotspots and if blisters happened I took good care of that. And now you just quit after 13km? Despite I have been building up slowly to much more kilometers?
I was on my hike Saturday, ready and all hyped up to go hiking from sunrise to sunset and making a lot of kilometers. I was sleepy as the sunrise was really early but my feet and legs felt awesome, fit and light, perfect start of this challenge. But then my foot started to be a little bit sensitive, I am usually okay with just sensitivity but after a bit over 13km it started to be annoying so I stopped, gave it a good rub, aired them out and had second breakfast. After this break I picked up my pace and my foot was still annoying. After 18km the foot started to seriously hurt. As food usually solves most of my problems I stopped and had first lunch, I felt some swelling going on in my foot so I did not took off my shoes but elevated my feet on my pack, and waited another half an hour. Upon continuing I knew I had to stop, it only got worse. I hiked, or better said struggled another 6km to the bus stop and had an embarrassing ride home. I did not made 70km, not even 50km, I got to 24km with a lot of pain.
Couple days later I have been on the couch a lot, having pillows for elevation almost constantly under my feet during day and night. Cooling it with ice packs on and off and stick to my couch by any chance. Literally half my family even came over to cook for me. I went to the doctor and apparently I overused it somehow, the problem is an inflammation in the tendons, luckily not a stress fracture. I got some anti-inflammatory medication prescribed and they are working pretty well. Meanwhile back at work I try to stay as much as possible at the desk, having ice packs around and my chair lowered and the foot on the desk. Colleagues get me some coffee once a while and I feel pretty lazy and good with this set up.
I hope to get out on the trail soon and continue to work on my challenge.
Hike on!
