The tape experiment

Writer's picture: Jansen on FootJansen on Foot

I felt so fit in the morning of my hike! If it were not for a painful middle toe, I felt like hiking the world in one day. Unfortunately, after one km of walking to the station I also felt a hotspot where I got some blisters last weeks as well. So in the train, I took of my shoe and sock and put some tape on the hotspot and tape my painful toe to the one next to it.

Off I went, again having the feeling of hiking the world! It was a beautiful area, the most height difference of the national park, de Veluwe, leading to an exciting, energizing hike. It was only after fifteen km that I realized I was already hiking for almost three hours and I did not took a break yet. So, as I don’t recommend to walk forty km with one single break, I sat down. However, it was of no punishment, it was on top of a hill resulting in a good view. Also there was an icecream cart, and many cyclists and motorbikes coming up the hill. While airing my feet, I had enough of the annoying tape around my toes me so I pulled it off, I felt the pain a bit more after but better than that annoying tape.

After half an hour I resumed my hike, I felt like I had a good pace again, and my steps were going light. Also, I could find the trail markings better than usual on this trail. Later, with only 5km to go I felt my feet complaining and with all the sand that got in my socks I decided to air them for couple minutes and to put on fresh socks. Taking my sock off, I found the tape on the hotspot all wrinkled and I took this one off as well.

Back home my feet hurt! I took of the shoes and well, I got some huge painful blisters. One on the toe sitting next to the taped one, not a big surprise I have to admit. And also one where I took off the tape as it was all wrinkled! Wrinkled tape may have been better than no tape after all, maybe next time a different type of tape.

Thankfully the blisters were only an issue back home, not on the trail. Despite it may sound miserable, I enjoyed and loved the trail. I cannot wait to go on a multiple day hike anymore!

Hike on!
